We are seeking a detail-oriented, organized Accountant to join our nonprofit organization’s Accounting & Finance team. The successful candidate will play a critical role in managing and overseeing financial operations, including cash receipts, reconciliations, workpaper preparation, and various accounting-related duties. This position is ideal for someone with a passion for nonprofit work and who enjoys working in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Cash Receipts Oversight: Ensure accurate and timely recording of all incoming cash transactions, including donations, grants, and other revenue sources. Monitor and reconcile cash receipts to ensure proper posting to the general ledger.
  • Reconciliations: Perform regular bank and credit card account reconciliations, ensuring that all transactions are accurately recorded and discrepancies are resolved in a timely manner. Reconcile accounts receivable, accounts payable, and other balance sheet accounts as needed.
  • Workpaper Preparation: Prepare and organize detailed workpapers and schedules to support financial statements and reporting. Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management.
  • General Accounting Duties: Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring that all financial data is accurately recorded and ready for reporting. Prepare journal entries and assist in maintaining the general ledger.
  • Compliance and Internal Controls: Adhere to nonprofit accounting principles (e.g., GAAP, FASB) and regulatory requirements. Support the Finance team in maintaining strong internal controls and ensuring compliance with all financial policies.
  • Special Projects: Assist with ad-hoc financial reporting, budgeting, audits, and other special projects as assigned by the Controller and CFO.
  • Other Duties as Assigned: Perform any other related duties as needed to support the efficient and effective financial operations of the organization.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in accounting, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and nonprofit financial regulations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and accounting software, NetSuite experience a plus.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with various stakeholders.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and nonprofit financial practices.
    • A commitment to the mission and values of the organization.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling financial information.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Nonprofit accounting experience, particularly in grant management or fund accounting.
  • Familiarity with accounting for restricted funds, contributions, and government contracts.
  • CPA or working toward CPA certification (or equivalent credentials) a plus.
