Position Summary
The Pipe Layer Trainee is trained in the classroom, on-the-job and while assisting other Construction personnel. The Pipe Layer Trainee must successfully complete all required classroom and field training, written and proficiency testing occurring during or prior to the end of a twenty-four (24) month training period to become eligible for consideration for advancement to the position of Pipe Layer.

Education

  • Required - High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)


Minimum Requirements

  • Preferred - Minimum of 1 year prior construction experience


Licenses, Certifications and/or Testing

  • Required - Have and maintain a valid driver’s license Upon Hire
  • Required - Class A CDL License with no restrictions and tanker endorsement. Maintain valid CDL license while holding position within 90 Days
  • Required - Hearing (audiogram) testing. Upon Hire
  • Required - Employee(s) in this position are covered under the Department of Transportation Operator Qualification (OQ) Rule, thus must acquire and maintain qualifications for all covered tasks assigned to this position under the District’s Operator Qualification Plan. Upon Hire
  • Required - Employee(s) in this position are covered under the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol testing provisions. This includes post-offer, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, follow-up, and return to duty testing. Upon Hire

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Efficient written and verbal communication skills, in English, to assist internal and external customers, co-workers and management professionally, regardless of provocation.
  • Familiarity with personal computers, tablets, and/or other electronic devices to include familiarity with, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise wide software (e.g., SAP). (Entry proficiency)
  • Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as required.


Essential Functions

  • Install and repair pre-stressed concrete, steel, plastic or iron gas and water mains, gas services and drips, gas and water valves and hydrants.
  • Excavate ground using equipment, tools (picks, shovels, spades, probe rods) or by hand to locate and excavate underground piping systems and facilities.
  • Prepares and joins pipes and fittings to ensure proper fit and function.
  • Backfill, tamp, and restore excavations to proper compaction and to original condition.
  • Direct traffic with the use of flag(s) to safely divert traffic away from work area(s).
  • Operate a variety of District equipment and vehicles, to include trucks with manual transmissions.
  • Perform the physical requirements of position (see attached Physical Demands).
  • Assist crew members as directed to ensure work performed is completed effectively and in accordance with established procedures and standards.
  • Maintain/clean equipment and tools to keep in good working order.

- Work shift may be extended during weekdays, may also include weekends and call-outs.

- Work in close quarters such as excavated sites below ground level and vaults.

- Occasional-frequent overhead lifting/reaching up to 40lbs (reaching for tools, etc.) without assistance depending on workday

- Frequent lifting and carrying machinery up to 90lbs (jackhammer)

- Occasional-frequent working in confined areas depending on workday

- Occasional-frequent awkward postures required to perform tasks

- Occasional-frequent pushing/pulling up to 100lbs of force (aligning materials during installations)

- Frequent ascending/descending ladders Excavates for installs, repairs and backfills (pre-stressed concrete, steel, plastic or iron gas and water mains, gas services, drips, gas/water valves and hydrants)

- Occasional-frequent pushing/pulling of materials or equipment approximately up to 100lbs of force to move valves, manhole covers, etc.

- Frequent gripping of hand/power tools, and equipment to perform tasks

- Frequent use of machinery to perform tasks - Frequent use of measuring tools, valves, and devices to perform tasks

- Frequent lifting/carrying tools and equipment up to 100lbs without assistance; heights and distances vary depending on workday

- Occasional-frequent overhead reaching to perform tasks up to 40lbs (reaching for tools, etc.)

- Frequent ascending/descending on ladders

- Occasional-frequent working in confined spaces depending on workday

- Frequent hand shoveling, use of spades and probe rods to excavate and locate utilities

- Frequent walking on concrete or uneven terrain; surfaces depend on workday

- Constant neck movements to perform tasks

- Occasional-frequent awkward postures required depending on workday

- Occasional reclining to reach areas

- Occasional-frequent balancing depending on workday

- Works in all inclement weather Cleans area as needed

- Removes excess materials, moves tools, cleans area up to standard


Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Field: Work inside and outside in all weather conditions and terrain for extended periods of time.
