Position Qualification

Position Summary
The Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience at the University of Nebraska Medical Center is seeking qualified candidates for a Research Instructor position. The research of our laboratory is focused on understanding the role of substances during HIV/SIV infection in nonhuman primate model using molecular biology, virology, immunology, systems biology, approaches. We are looking for self-motivated individual to work mainly in understanding HIV/SIV pathogenesis/cure/ substance abuse using non-human primate (NHP) models. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, self-driven, have a passion for research and a deep interest in contributing to existing programs, as well as to develop their own research program. Under minimal supervision, this position is responsible for designing and conducting research studies related to ongoing NIH/Industry funded projects in the laboratory.

Responsibilities include:

  • Write and submit scientific publications for peer-reviewed journals, assist in grant writing.
  • Train graduate and postdoctoral fellows, and work with technicians to complete research projects.
  • Communicates study results in public setting, such as conferences, etc.
  • Design experiments, conduct original research, and perform data analysis.
  • Remain abreast of changes and developments in the field of research. Establish and maintain a network of professional relationships.
  • High-level knowledge of and extensive experience, in standard research protocols in molecular biology, virology, cellular immunology, neurovirology and experience in handling large and small animals required.
  • Candidates must have a strong publication record and should have very good oral and written communication skills.
  • Candidate should also be able to demonstrate experience maintaining organized data, working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment, conceptualizing and prioritizing objectives and exercising independent judgment.
  • Advanced theoretical understanding of work being performed required.

Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in scientific field or DVM, MD or MBBS

Supplemental Qualifications
  • Applicants must have completed all the requirements for their Doctoral degree at the time of application.
  • Preference with a degree in DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine), PHD or MD or MBBS. Extensive practical hands-on experience with NHP handling desired.
  • Prior experience in infectious disease research, immunology, and molecular biology and published work in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Deep understanding of HIV/SIV reservoirs is needed plus strong motivation to harness this knowledge for drug discovery.
  • Must show evidence of training in molecular biology techniques and experience in cell culture, immunoassays, and quantitative PCR methods.
  • Extensive working experience using flow cytometry/imaging/ spatial transcriptomics/MRI/PET/CT preferred.
  • Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications and contingent upon receipt of funding.
